New species are being discovered in the wild with increasing frequency. Across these stories, rediscovery, new descriptions and closer examination reveal how much remains to be understood about India's freshwater biodiversity.

New fish species are being discovered in the wild, often in habitats under increasing threats. In this feature, The Weekend Aquarist follows several recent discoveries and rediscoveries, exploring the habitats in which they were found and why documenting them matters for freshwater biodiversity, conservation and the aquarium community. From a rediscovered eel in Arunachal Pradesh to new hill-stream catfishes and a newly described snakehead from Meghalaya, these stories show how careful examination can reveal species that have remained overlooked for decades - sometimes in places that may appear familiar at first glance.



A Slippery Comeback: Rediscovery of Moringua hodgarti from Arunachal Pradesh

More than a hundred years after its original description, the enigmatic swamp eel Moringua hodgarti was rediscovered in the Siang Valley of Arunachal Pradesh. The species was first described by S.L. Chaudhuri in 1913, but was subsequently lost to science. Its rediscovery came during an Abor Expedition, when researchers encountered specimens in irrigation channels and observed them burrowing into substrate disturbed by water.


The specimens were found amid mud and gravel, and researchers noted their tendency to swiftly burrow into the substrate when disturbed. The rediscovery highlights the Siang Valley as an important but poorly explored freshwater biodiversity hotspot and reinforces the need for habitat modification, targeted surveys and conservation attention in the fragile river systems of the eastern Himalaya.



Scuttling Back into the Spotlight: Rediscovery of the Atyopsis in India

After a gap of more than seven decades, the shrimp genus Atyopsis has been rediscovered in mainland India. The genus was previously known from historical records, but had not been reported from India for 72 years. The study documents Atyopsis from both clear, fast-flowing streams in eastern India and estuarine habitats in western India. The rediscovery provides another reminder of how much remains unresolved in freshwater biodiversity. Combining morphological and molecular investigation helped distinguish the Indian material and narrow a long-standing distributional gap. Beyond resolving that uncertainty, the finding highlights how India's ecosystems can continue to reveal species that have remained poorly known.



Beneath the Rapids: Two New and One Rediscovered Glyptothorax

The diversity of hill-stream catfishes in the genus Glyptothorax has also come under closer examination. A detailed reappraisal of these fishes has revealed that their diversity has been seriously underestimated. Researchers described two new species from the Ganges river system and revalidated Glyptothorax dakpathari, a species described in 1976 but later treated as a synonym due to taxonomic uncertainty. The study examined morphology, including features of the thoracic adhesive apparatus, body proportions, fin morphology and colour patterns. The findings establish Glyptothorax bhiruni and Glyptothorax himalaicus as distinct species while showing that the Ganges basin remains a centre of hidden hill-stream fish diversity. These findings also underline the importance of examining historical material carefully. Taxonomic revision can uncover species that have been overlooked even within well-known river systems.


Hidden in the Hills: A New Snakehead from Northeast India

In a small stream flowing into the Simsang River in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills, scientists discovered a striking new species of snakehead fish. The species was named Channa nachi after local Garo name, and adds to the growing record of India's extraordinary freshwater biodiversity. Belonging to the ‘gachua group’ of dwarf snakeheads, Channa nachi is distinguished by its appearance, including the complete absence of spots or blotches on the body. The discovery also helped clarify that Channa brahmacharyi is not a separate species, but actually the same as Channa pomanensis. The discovery raises India's total number of snakehead species to 25 and reinforces the Eastern Himalaya as a global hotspot for freshwater fish diversity. It also highlights the role of local collectors and hobbyists, whose observations can be crucial to uncovering regions that remain poorly studied.



Why These Discoveries Matter

Taken together, these discoveries tell a larger story about freshwater biodiversity. Species can remain hidden because they are difficult to find, poorly studied or confused with related species. In other cases, a species may disappear from scientific records for decades before being encountered again. Rediscovery and taxonomic research can therefore do more than add another name to a list. They can reveal important gaps in our understanding of where species occur and draw attention to the habitats that support them. For freshwater systems facing increasing pressure, that knowledge becomes particularly important. The stories of these fishes and invertebrates show why continued exploration, careful identification and attention to overlooked habitats remain essential.
