River Giants: The Evolving Story of Bagarius

Few freshwater fishes inspire as much awe as those of the genus Bagarius. Known variously as goonch, devil catfish, or giant catfish, these riverine giants occupy a unique place in ichthyology — and as it turns out, science has only recently begun to understand just how many of them there really are.

Early Discoveries and Taxonomic Beginnings (1822–1900s)
The story of Bagarius began in the early nineteenth century, at a time when the great rivers of India were only just entering the taxonomic imagination of European naturalists. In 1822, Francis Buchanan-Hamilton described Bagarius bagarius from the Ganges River basin in West Bengal. Then, in 1839, William Henry Sykes described Bagarius yarrelli from the Krishna River system in Maharashtra, based on large-bodied specimens that appeared distinct from B. bagarius. For much of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the genus was thought to be small, with just a few widely distributed and highly variable species. The name B. yarrelli was applied broadly to giant Bagarius populations across South and Southeast Asia, while smaller populations were simply lumped in as B. bagarius — a perception likely reinforced by how logistically difficult it was to collect large, fast-water fishes in the first place, and by a tendency to assign geographically distant populations to species already known.
Re-evaluating a “Well-Known” Genus
By the late twentieth century, improved collecting efforts and growing museum collections across South and Southeast Asia began to reveal that the diversity of Bagarius had been badly underestimated. All Bagarius species share the same basic toolkit for life in fast-flowing rivers — depressed heads, broad paired fins for adhesion, cryptic colouration. But careful examination of morphology and colour patterns across multiple collections uncovered consistent differences, revealing that several populations long treated as a single species were, in fact, distinct.
A Landmark Discovery from the Salween: Bagarius protos (2025)
Bagarius protos was described in 2025, bringing long-overdue attention to the Salween River — one of Asia’s last largely free-flowing great rivers. Known for its deep gorges and prolonged geological isolation, the Salween has long been suspected to harbour unique biodiversity, yet remained poorly studied. Morphologically, B. protos is a large-bodied species inhabiting deep channels and powerful currents, distinguished from its relatives by cranial proportions, fin morphology, and live colouration.

Its most intriguing feature, though, lies in its evolutionary position — genetic work shows that B. protos separated from other Bagarius species very early on. Because the Salween has been isolated from neighbouring systems like the Mekong and Irrawaddy for so long, this fish evolved entirely on its own. The discovery reinforces a bigger idea: that Asia’s major rivers act as long-term evolutionary arenas, each capable of quietly generating its own endemic megafauna.
Correcting History: Bagarius dolichonema from the Irrawaddy (2025)
Described alongside B. protos in the same year, Bagarius dolichonema represents the Irrawaddy River basin’s own contribution to the growing diversity of giant Bagarius. The Irrawaddy, draining much of central Myanmar, had long been treated as part of the broader Indo-Gangetic region — meaning its giant Bagarius were routinely, and incorrectly, assigned to B. bagarius. The description of B. dolichonema finally corrected that oversimplification. The species is distinguished by thread-like extensions from the pectoral fins reaching toward the anal region, a slender caudal area, and a distinctive placement of the adipose fin close to the anal fin — along with subtle skeletal differences that further support its status as something new. Its elongate fins and body proportions reflect adaptation to the Irrawaddy’s powerful main channels and deep pools below rapids, marking the basin out as its own independent centre of freshwater evolution.
Currently Recognised Species of Bagarius
Alongside B. protos and B. dolichonema, several other species round out the genus as it’s understood today:
Bagarius bagarius (with B. yarrelli now treated as a synonym) — distributed across the Indian subcontinent, this true giant can reach up to 6 feet, but has been nearly fished to extinction in the Western Ghats.
Bagarius lica — first described from Indonesia in 1903, now known from Thailand through to southern China, favouring large lowland rivers in the Mekong basin and Sundaland.
Bagarius suchus — described from Thailand in 1983, and likely the smallest species in the genus, adapted to fast-flowing hill streams rather than deep channels.
Bagarius rutilus — described in 2000 from the Red River drainage in Vietnam and southern China.
Bagarius vegrandis — described as recently as 2021 from the Mekong basin, previously mistaken for other large Bagarius.

Hidden Giants and an Uncertain Future
The genus has likely not finished surprising us. Isolated river basins — especially in the eastern Himalayas and Indochina — may still harbour undescribed diversity. As recent work has shown, even the giants of the river can remain hidden in plain sight. Despite their size, Bagarius species face mounting threats from dam construction, river regulation, sand mining, and overfishing. As development pressures intensify, recognising and naming these species becomes a critical first step toward conserving these mysterious river giants.
